During Easter weekend we headed over to the other side of the mountains & had the pleasure of shooting Sara & Matt’s engagement photos. The weather was iffy at best, but it was still far better than the previous visit we had, where it rained the entire time—at least this time there were times when the sky wasn’t dumping on us.

For this session we drove up to Boulevard Park in Bellingham and were able to get a few shots before the rain started. We warmed up for a few minutes in Woods Coffee (An outstanding place that was packed with people. The hot chocolate was great & I understand the coffee is as well). When it became clear the rain wasn’t stopping we decided to head over to Sara & Matt’s wedding venue, The Bellingham Cruise Terminal to check it out. It’s a very cool space with an amazing view of Puget Sound.

Matt & Sara were so laid back and a pleasure to work with (not surprised at all) and so at ease with each other and me. I think/hope that comes across in the photos.

  • I love the shots of them kissing under the umbrella. Awesome shots!

  • I love the use of the umbrellas! Too cute :D

  • Fave = first shot. Is the ceiling with those lines naturally lit like that backlighting the couple as well, or did you do that?

  • I really like this session! The umbrella shots are super cute! You have some awesome perspectives!!

  • Thanks Kyle. Yup, it’s naturally lit up like that. The entire wall behind them is a window. It jumped out to me when we were leaving. Had to get that last shot!

  • I *love* that first shot. Lots of negative space and the lines are great. So is the bright spot that’s behind them, that fades to darker. Very nice!

  • wow – your lighting, processing and photography is GREAT!

  • That’s cool, it looks like a weird roof with fancy lighting or something. Either way, love how you photographed it!

  • I am so jealous of your skin tones. These photos are so technical perfect that I think I’m going to swoon. Great lighting and framing too.

Hey Matt can I ask a question about image #2 (the side by side portraits). Those are single light setups, right? And about how far above them are you when you shoot those?

    Great stuff as usual!

  • Great session! I agree with the other commenter about the skin tones. The colors are yummy.
And before I knew you were a Nikon guy, I knew you were a Nikon guy. Even though I shoot a Canon I am secretly crushing on Nikon.

  • Thanks Eric! Those shots were natural light only. They were sitting pretty close to a large window on a extra cloudy day=natural giant softbox. You can tell by the irregular catchlights. I also had my wife hold up her white coat on the shadow side to even out the exposure and brighten up the shadow side.

These were taken with my 70-200. I’d normally use my 85mm for these but it was acting up so I couldn’t use it. So I was relatively far away. I was standing in the windowsill so I imagine I was a few feet above eye level.

    Hope that helps.

  • Great set Matt. I love the procession on these images. My favorite two images are definitely the shot of them kissing on the pier with the umbrella and the black and white low shutter shot of them walking together. Really beautiful stuff.
